This Legislative Session, House Joint Memorial 42 introduced by Representative Gail Chasey and Senator Linda Lopez proclaimed “2013 as the year of CHILDREN SAVINGS ACCOUNTS in New Mexico”.

Prosperity Works is bringing Children’s Savings Accounts to New Mexico. A year-long planning process funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation will culminate with the launch of a pilot program later this year with 1500 of New Mexico’s low income kindergartners getting savings accounts.

Designing a system that provides avenues for savings over the life span is essential to the economic security of New Mexico’s households.  Ending Poverty in New Mexico is not only feasible, it’s good for the state, our businesses, the education system, and the community.

Over the course of the next several months National leaders will join local leaders and learning from demonstration projects that have been implemented in the United States over the past decade. A series of Think Tank discussions will start in April.  Representatives from Banking on the Poor, the Trusteeship Institute, CFED, New Mexico Voices for Children, First Nations Development Institute, and the University of Kansas are among many of the national and community leaders taking part in the discussions.

Leaders and community members from all over New Mexico will be involved in designing a product that works here, specific to the many diverse populations that make up the Land of Enchantment.
